History - Akane went to the stars, having signed on a ship with a couple of dolphins as part of the crew. She had almost finished her college education, when she lost her grant and her job that was covering the cost of her education. She ended up being posted to the Station to work with the dolphins there, to treat any injuries or illnesses that they might have.
On the voyage to Pern, Akane became close friends with Blanca Sanchez. She's foster mother to Blanca's son Deme.
